This past weekend I was happy to see that Scott Cambell (http://www.pyramidcar.com/) was going to be in my area for the Princeton Children’s Book Festival. When I got to his spot at the show, there were plenty of happy faced kids and parents already engrossed in his books. I’ve been really interested in his work lately. He hits this perfect combination of fine art and crazy character designs that look loose at first, but then reveal some great emotion and color work. I loved his designs on Psychonauts, and it was great to see him working on concept art again for the doublefine adventure.

I would have loved to stay longer, but I didn’t want to get in the way of those interested kids. In fact, a lot of nerdier artists and children’s books at the show were doing really well, it seemed. “Look, Dad! Zombies!” is probably not something I expected a kid to be screaming excitedly in my lifetime.

Even though I live equidistant from two of the biggest cities in the country, getting to the conventions held at them can be a real pain. Plus the price of admission + parking, all just to stare at more superhero stuff than I really care about isn’t really something I can justify. That said, I think I’ll head down to Bethesda, MD on Sunday for SPX.

The high concentration of creators and designers seems like a better way to spend my time!

And we’re back. Comics will be up Tuesdays and Thursdays again, like in days of old!

You might see the style fluctuate a bit as I test some ideas, but for now it’s mostly the same, just with a little less stress behind it.

Again, I want to thank those of you who have been checking the site regularly. Here’s to another year of having fun making comics!

Big thanks to Fox over at Sketched Comedy for checking up on me, and to R. Filyaw over at WHOMP! comics for adding a link to me. Also a big thanks to Gary over at FLEEN for some great advice!

Wow! Who’s been a busy dude! Me! That’s who. Well, mostly. Ok, I played some video games.

But mostly, I was pretty insane getting ready for a wonderful wedding. Everything went well, and I am now happily married to a wonderful wife.

Now we are working on finding a new home for myself, my two cats, and our latest addition, our Rescue Greyhound “Atrus”. Needless to say, work on new strips has been slow, but I’ve got some stuff in the pipe.

I was hoping to wait until after I design a better site to launch some strips, but I should really just go ahead and get some content for you all. Keep your eyes peeled for more here from me, and thank you for keeping an eye out for Manifest Destiny.

A Fancy Word for “Not Updating”

Something happened last week while I was drawing the strip. It was one of those happy accidents where you unintentionally draw a character a different way and say “Hey, wait a minute, that looks good! Hrmmm…”, but then I looked at the clock and realized I didn’t have enough time to really flesh out the new design. I had to set it aside for later. Well, later never came. I’m getting married next month and there’s still a decent amount of shopping and preparing to do (i’m super excited). Then I have a vacation coming up soon after.

It’s been an amazing year making Manifest Destiny. I’ve been cutting my teeth on both comedy writing and drawing here, and it’s been incredibly valuable. That said, I feel like I haven’t been able to devote the amount of time I feel is necessary for each comic lately, and I certainly haven’t been able to get ahead in several months.

So for the sake of doing it right, I’m going to put Manifest Destiny aside for now. I want to work on those designs without having to meet scheduled updates. I also want to take everything I’ve learned this year and maybe focus it into a new project, or maybe take the strip in a fresh new direction. Or maybe as soon as I send this off I’ll suddenly be hit with a ton of new ideas for Tom and friends, and I want to really make each one of those COUNT. (edit: this has just happened). Either way, thanks to everyone for coming back all year. Sharing this has been amazing.

Check the blog area for updates (I don’t have a tumblr or a true deviantart account, so I’ll probably post sketches here in the Blog section)! BLORP!
